Clayton, NC: Cleveland School |
| Description: From the time it was built 1927 until it closed its doors 70 years later, the old Cleveland School just southwest of Clayton saw thousands of children pass through its doors. Across from a convenience store and beside a new residential development, the old school was first used for storage starting in 1997, then sat empty while the community tried to find a way to save it. Meanwhile, Johnston County, like other fast-growing parts of North Carolina, was feeling the pinch for affordable housing to meet the needs of an aging population. |
| Impact: The answer was a $3.5 million adaptive reuse by The Landmark Group that turned the old school into 25 one- and two-bedroom apartments for people 55 and older. Some of the units are reserved for people with disabilities, and all rent to people whose incomes are at or below 60% of the area median income. With its long hallways and rich heritage, Cleveland School Apartments offers another option for senior housing. |
