Darlington, SC: Darlington Downtown |
| Description: Early last century, when the city was rebuilding from the ashes of yet another downtown fire, there were apartments for rent above the shops and businesses going up in Darlington Public Square. Times were good; prices for tobacco and cotton were high. The city’s intense growth and development continued into the 1920s, until overproduction, international competition and the Great Depression all took their toll. The economy surged after World War II, but the residential activity that came with it grew away from Darlington’s historic core. |
| Impact: Today, like a Phoenix rising from the ashes of neglect, downtown Darlington is looking forward. A public-private partnership spearheaded by The Landmark Group has restored five historic buildings, carved 28 lofts and apartments and created retail and office space currently occupied by five different tenants. By its example, the mixed-use development has spawned additional private investment downtown by other developers, resulting in new jobs and the restoration of 13 buildings. |
