Randleman, NC: Randleman School Commons |
| Description: When constructed in 1904, the old Randleman School had the distinction of being the first brick building in Randolph County. Later the school could boast of having had the likes of NASCAR legend Richard Petty pass through its doors as students. By 1960 the school had closed, and until 1999 it was used as a furniture store. Spurred on by local residents, the city bought the property in 2001 and saved it from death by neglect. |
| Impact: After an earlier effort stalled, The Landmark Group headed a partnership that applied affordable housing tax credits, historic property tax credits and other layers of financing to convert the old building into 30 apartments for seniors. Original hardwood flooring was preserved, and the auditorium, where generations of students took the stage, was completely restored. With a downtown location next to the Randleman Senior Center, the Randleman School Commons is once again a community anchor. |
